In 1853, Friedrich Peyer im Hof, Heinrich Moser, and Conrad Neher founded a company near the Rhine Falls in Switzerland.

A few years later, the company entered a competition connected with the development of a new rifle for the Swiss military. In 1864, the Prelaz-Burnand rifle was selected, and the company received an order for 30,000 muzzle-loading rifles.
The company subsequently changed its name to the Swiss Industrial Company - Schweizerische Industrie-Gesellschaft, or SIG.

What makes this beginning particularly interesting is that SIG was not originally created as a firearms brand. Firearms became one of the company's major areas of development after it had already established itself as an industrial manufacturer.

During the 20th century, SIG gradually developed a reputation for precision manufacturing, reliability, and high-quality engineering.
One of the most important firearms of this period was the SIG P49 - a pistol developed for the Swiss military in 1949. The model later became known as the P210.
The P210 became one of the legends of Swiss firearms manufacturing. It was used not only by military personnel but also by competitive shooters, while the pistol became known for its exceptional manufacturing quality and precision.
Other important SIG models followed. The company continued developing its pistol designs and gradually established the engineering principles that would define its future products.
The philosophy was not simply to make firearms that worked. It was about refining the design, manufacturing process, and user experience over time.
SIG Sauer: Swiss and German Roots
The name SIG SAUER also has an interesting history.
During the 1970s, SIG expanded its firearms business in Europe. One of the important companies involved was J.P. Sauer & Sohn, a German firearms manufacturer with roots going back to the 18th century.
SIG and Sauer began cooperating in the production of pistols, and J.P. Sauer & Sohn later became part of the SIG group.
The combination of the two names eventually became the basis of the SIG Sauer brand.
It was an important step in the international development of the company. The future SIG SAUER was increasingly built around a combination of Swiss engineering traditions, German firearms expertise, and the rapidly growing American market.
P220: A New Generation of Service Pistols
The P220 became one of the key models in the development of modern SIG.
It represented a more contemporary approach to the service pistol, moving beyond the traditional image of Swiss firearms and targeting the requirements of military and law-enforcement users.
The P220 became an important part of SIG's international expansion and established a foundation for the company's future pistol families.
The next major model would take SIG even further into the international spotlight.
P226: The Pistol That Changed SIG's History
If you were to make a list of the most important SIG SAUER firearms ever produced, the P226 would almost certainly be near the top.
The P226 was developed for the XM9 trials, a US military competition to select a new service pistol.
SIG SAUER did not win the competition. But the P226 still attracted considerable attention from the American military.
In 1989, the pistol was adopted by the US Navy's special operations community as the MK25 for the Navy SEALs.
That became one of the defining moments in the international history of the P226.
The pistol developed a reputation as a dependable service handgun and remained an important part of SIG SAUER's identity for decades.

In 1992, SIG began production of the P229 in the United States.

How SIG Became an American Company
In 1985, SIGARMS was established in the United States.
The American operation initially focused on importing SIG pistols, including the P220 and P230. Over time, the product range expanded and the company developed its own manufacturing capabilities.
In 1990, SIGARMS moved to Exeter, New Hampshire.
The American operation gradually became so important that in 2007 SIGARMS officially changed its name to SIG SAUER.
This was more than a change of branding.
A company with Swiss origins and a German connection through Sauer was developing a new center of gravity in the United States.
Today, SIG SAUER is headquartered in New Hampshire and has substantial US manufacturing capabilities. Its product range extends well beyond pistols and rifles to include optics, ammunition, suppressors, and other products.
P320: When a Pistol Became a Platform
The next major transformation in SIG SAUER's history came with the P320.
The company introduced the concept of a modular pistol that could be adapted to different requirements and configurations.
That idea proved particularly attractive to military customers.
In 2017, the US Army selected a variant of the P320 as the basis for its Modular Handgun System. The resulting military pistols became known as the M17 and M18 - a full-size and a more compact configuration.
The first M17 and M18 pistols were delivered to the 101st Airborne Division in November 2017. The US Army explicitly identified the SIG Sauer P320 as the basis of the system.
The US Army's original announcement describes the beginning of M17 and M18 fielding.
In 2019, SIG SAUER produced its one-millionth P320. The company also identifies the platform as the basis for the M17 and M18 used across the US military.

This represented a very different philosophy from the one associated with the P210.
The P210 was known for precision.
The P226 became known for service use.
The P320 made modularity one of its defining characteristics.
P365: A Small Pistol With a Huge Impact
In 2018, SIG SAUER introduced the P365.
The compact pistol was primarily aimed at the civilian market and concealed-carry segment.
P365 became a major commercial success and demonstrated another side of SIG SAUER.
The company was no longer competing only for military contracts. It was also capable of creating products that could reshape an entire segment of the civilian firearms market.
This added another important dimension to the company's portfolio.
SIG now had products designed around very different priorities - from precision and military service to modularity and compact everyday carry.
From Pistols to the MCX
SIG SAUER has never been exclusively a pistol manufacturer.
One of its most interesting modern developments is the MCX platform.
The concept behind MCX is strongly connected with modularity and the ability to develop the platform over multiple generations.
In 2022, SIG introduced the MCX-SPEAR-LT, a new evolution of the MCX family that incorporated experience from earlier versions, testing, and feedback from users, including special operations personnel.

Which Modern Militaries Use SIG SAUER?
Today, SIG SAUER has a much broader international presence than its original Swiss and American military markets.
The most famous example remains the United States, where the M17 and M18 became part of the Modular Handgun System.
But the P320 has also been selected by military and government organizations in other countries.
SIG SAUER identifies Australia, Canada, Denmark, and other countries among the users of its P320 family and other defense products.
And in 2025, a particularly symbolic country joined that list.
Switzerland.
In December 2025, SIG SAUER announced that the P320 had been selected as the new standard sidearm of the Swiss Armed Forces.
This is almost a perfect historical circle.
The company that began producing firearms for the Swiss military in the 19th century eventually returned to the Swiss Armed Forces more than 160 years later with a completely modern platform.
And this time, it was not the classic P210.
It was the modular P320.
SIG SAUER and the War in Ukraine
The history of SIG SAUER also has a connection to the war in Ukraine.
One of the more specifically documented examples is the SIG MCX.
In March 2022, shortly after the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, US company T.REX ARMS published material featuring a SIG MCX configuration used by Ukrainian special operations personnel.
This is significant because it documents the presence of a specific SIG platform in Ukrainian military use at a very early stage of the full-scale war.
At the same time, this is an area where precision matters.
It would be incorrect to claim that every SIG SAUER model is widely used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, or that MCX is a standard rifle across the Ukrainian military. Publicly available evidence supports specific documented cases of use, rather than broad conclusions about the scale of SIG SAUER's presence.
The war in Ukraine has nevertheless become a real-world testing environment for a huge range of modern Western weapons.
Equipment that only a few years ago might have been seen mainly at exhibitions, in catalogs, or with specialized military units is now being used in an actual large-scale war.

Over more than a century and a half, SIG SAUER and its predecessors have produced a huge range of firearms. But several models became particularly important to the company's history.
SIG P210 - a legendary Swiss pistol and a symbol of precision manufacturing.

SIG P226 - a famous service pistol strongly associated with military and special operations use.
