The name Colt has become one of the most recognizable in the history of firearms. For some people, it is primarily associated with the legendary Peacemaker revolver. For others, it is the Colt 1911, while others know Colt through the AR-15 and M16.
But the history of Colt is much more interesting than a list of famous firearms.
Founded by Samuel Colt in the 19th century, the company was one of the pioneers that helped transform firearms manufacturing from a largely artisanal craft into modern industrial production. Over nearly two centuries, Colt has experienced technological changes, wars, financial crises, changes in ownership and even bankruptcy - yet the brand has survived.
Today, Colt is part of the large international defense and firearms group Colt CZ Group.
This is the story of how a small American firearms company became one of the most recognizable names in the history of firearms.
Samuel Colt and the Beginning of the Story
Samuel Colt was born in 1814 in Hartford, Connecticut. From a young age, he became interested in mechanics and in the idea of creating a firearm capable of firing several shots without manually reloading after every shot.
In 1836, Colt received U.S. Patent No. 138 for a pistol design using a rotating cylinder.
This was an important moment. The basic idea of a revolving firearm did not appear completely out of nowhere - various multi-shot systems had existed before. What Colt managed to do was turn the revolving-cylinder concept into a practical system that could be manufactured commercially.
That same year, he founded the Patent Arms Manufacturing Company in Paterson, New Jersey. Production of the first Colt revolver, the Paterson, began there.
The Paterson - The First Attempt at a New Era
The Colt Paterson was named after the city where it was manufactured.
For its time, the design was unusual. Instead of firing a single shot and reloading the firearm, the shooter had a cylinder containing several chambers that could be brought into firing position one after another.
However, Colt's first business venture was not a major success.
Production was complicated and expensive, while demand was insufficient. The Paterson operation eventually shut down.
But Colt gained something extremely valuable - experience.
He realized that creating a new firearm was not enough. The real challenge was developing a manufacturing system capable of producing large numbers of identical products with interchangeable components.
That idea would become one of the foundations of Colt's future success.
Colt Walker - The Return of Colt
In the 1840s, Colt received another opportunity.
Captain Samuel Hamilton Walker of the U.S. Army was interested in developing a more powerful revolver. In 1847, Colt and Walker worked together on a new design.
The result was the Colt Walker.
It was an enormous revolver for its time - much larger and more powerful than the earlier Paterson.
The Walker demonstrated what the first Colt venture had lacked: a military customer and a clear practical application.
After this, Colt's history began to move much faster.
Colt Builds a Factory
By the 1850s, Colt was no longer thinking only about individual firearm designs. He was thinking about industrial-scale production.
In 1855, the new Colt factory opened in Hartford.
According to the company's own historical timeline, Colt had become the world's largest private armament factory, producing around 150 firearms per day.
This was important for more than just its production numbers.
Colt increasingly applied principles of standardization, precision machining and interchangeable components to firearms manufacturing.
In other words, Colt was no longer simply selling a "revolver made by a gunsmith."
The company was building an industrial system for manufacturing firearms.
Colt and the American Civil War
During the American Civil War, Colt received major military orders.
The company manufactured revolvers and other firearms for the Union forces. Colt also produced the Special Model 1861 Rifle-Musket.
The war became a massive test of American industrial capacity and demonstrated the advantages of large-scale manufacturing.
Samuel Colt died in 1862 at just 47 years old.
Control of the company passed to his wife, Elizabeth Jarvis Colt.
Two years later, the Colt factory was almost completely destroyed by fire. Elizabeth Colt had insured the facility and oversaw its reconstruction.
The company continued operating.
Single Action Army - The Birth of a Legend
In 1873, Colt introduced a firearm that would eventually become one of the most famous revolvers in history.
It was the Colt Single Action Army.
It also became known as the Peacemaker.
The revolver was originally developed for military use and later became one of the defining symbols of the American West.
The Colt SAA gained enormous cultural influence. Its image became firmly established in literature, movies and Western culture.
As a result, the Peacemaker became an example of how a technical product can eventually become a cultural icon.
Interestingly, the modern image of the Peacemaker as the gun that "won the West" is largely a product of later popular culture rather than a simple historical description.
From Revolvers to Semi-Automatic Pistols
By the end of the 19th century, firearms technology was changing rapidly.
Revolvers remained important, but semi-automatic pistols were beginning to emerge.
In 1900, Colt introduced the Model 1900.
It was Colt's first commercially produced semi-automatic pistol and an important step toward the next chapter in the company's history.
The Model 1900 used a short-recoil operating system and became one of the early commercial examples of a design concept that would later evolve into the famous Colt 1911.
Colt 1911 - One of the Most Famous Pistols of the 20th Century
The next major milestone was the Colt Model 1911.
Its design was created by American firearms designer John Browning.
After extensive trials, the pistol was officially adopted by the U.S. Armed Forces in 1911 as the standard service pistol.
The Colt 1911 became one of the most recognizable military pistols of the 20th century.
It served with the U.S. military for decades, while the basic design became the foundation for countless later models and custom variants.
During World War II, Colt and other American manufacturers produced large numbers of the 1911A1. According to Colt's historical timeline, approximately 1.8 million 1911A1 pistols were produced by American industry during the wartime period.
Colt Python and the Culture of the American Revolver
After World War II, Colt continued developing its revolver line.
In 1955, the company introduced the Colt Python.
The Python became one of Colt's best-known revolvers and eventually developed a reputation as a premium firearm.
Its popularity went far beyond technical specifications.
Like the Single Action Army, the Python became part of American popular culture.
During the second half of the 20th century, Colt was no longer simply a military firearms manufacturer. Its products became strongly associated with American movies, television, sport shooting and the civilian market.
From Revolvers to the AR-15
The next major transformation took place not in pistols, but in rifles.
In 1961, Colt acquired exclusive rights to manufacture and market the AR-15 from Armalite.
Two years later, the company received its first major government contract to produce the M16 - 104,000 rifles.
This became one of the most important moments in Colt's history.
A company that had become famous primarily for revolvers and pistols was now becoming one of the major manufacturers of American military rifles.
A new chapter in the company's history had begun.
Colt in Canada
Colt's history gradually became more international.
In the 1990s, Colt Defense acquired the Canadian manufacturer Diemaco.
The company subsequently became Colt Canada.
This was another important step in Colt's transformation from an American manufacturer into an international firearms brand with production capabilities outside the United States.
Crisis and a New Life for the Company
The history of Colt was not a continuous story of success.
In the 21st century, the company faced serious financial difficulties.
In 2015, Colt Defense LLC filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States. Following restructuring, the company continued operating.
In 2016, Colt's Manufacturing was acquired by a group of private investors.
The legendary brand that had been associated with American firearms manufacturing since the 19th century had entered a completely different corporate era.
But an even bigger change was still ahead.
2021 - Colt Becomes Part of a Czech Group
On May 21, 2021, Česká zbrojovka Group completed the acquisition of Colt Holding.
It was a turning point.
Two major firearms brands with very different histories had effectively become part of the same group.
On one side was Colt, an American company whose history began in 1836.
On the other was Česká zbrojovka, a Czech manufacturer with its own long industrial tradition.
In 2022, the group officially changed its name to Colt CZ Group.
Colt was no longer simply an American firearms company.
It had become part of a new international industrial group.

In 2025, Colt CZ Group reported revenue of CZK 23.4 billion, an increase of 4.6% compared with 2024.
Adjusted EBITDA reached CZK 4.66 billion, while adjusted net income was CZK 2.03 billion.
The group's business structure is also much broader than simply manufacturing pistols and rifles.
In 2025, ammunition sales were an important contributor to growth, while both Colt and CZ recorded their strongest results in their respective histories.

What Remains of the Original Colt?
It is remarkable that after almost two centuries, the Colt name has not disappeared.
Instead, it has become one of the major brands within a large international group.
Today, Colt exists alongside CZ, Colt Canada, Dan Wesson, Sellier & Bellot, Spuhr and other companies.
This is a very different structure from Samuel Colt's original factory in Hartford.
But the connection with the past remains.
The horse is still part of the logo.
The name is still Colt.
