Austria Needs a New Service Pistol

At the beginning of the 1980s, the Austrian Armed Forces began looking for a new service pistol.

The requirements were demanding. The new weapon needed to be lightweight, reliable, safe and easy to maintain. It also had to withstand demanding testing while remaining suitable for large-scale production.

For Gaston Glock, this was an opportunity.

Polymer handgun components and frames had appeared before Glock. Heckler & Koch, for example, had already introduced the polymer-framed VP70 in 1970.
